Imagine my surprise, when I looked out the kitchen windowto see a woodpecker eating at the bird feeder. It was a Red-bellied Woodpecker<\/strong>, Melanerpes carolinus.<\/em>

A few days later, I saw what I assumed was the same individual at a neighbor’s bird feeder. It’s definitely the male of the species<\/p>\n\n\n

He then poked around for insects in the bark of a nearby tree.

The Downy Woodpecker<\/strong> (Picoides pubescens<\/em>) sometimes visits my feeders.

In winter my backyard is home to another variety of woodpecker, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker<\/strong> (Sphyrapicus<\/em> varius).

Woodpeckers are not the only birds that provide a burst of red color …
