In the growing dimness, a large bird lands on a pier piling, emitting an undignified \u201cquok\u201d sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"623\" data-id=\"1830\" src=\"http:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6495-830x623.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6495-830x623.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6495-830x623-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6495-830x623-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n<p>These mysterious birds are night herons, arriving for a long night of fishing. More specifically, they are <strong>Black-crowned night herons<\/strong>, otherwise known as <em>Nycticorax nycticorax. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"621\" data-id=\"1831\" src=\"http:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6501-830x621.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6501-830x621.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6501-830x621-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.megforward.com\/birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_6501-830x621-768x575.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>  About the size of a seagull, there&#8217;s no mistaking a night heron&#8217;s profile. Chunky and hunchbacked. Remaining motionless, the bird I&#8217;m watching is apparently unmoved by me or the other foot traffic on the boardwalk. The ghostly form seems to be asleep until all of a sudden it STRIKES, diving into the blackened water below.
